Spouse visa

For foreigners legally married to a Colombian citizen with effective cohabitation. Accrues time toward Resident after five years. Open work permit. Up to 3-year validity.

Requirements

  • Colombian civil marriage record (within last 3 months).
  • Cohabitation letter signed by the Colombian spouse + ID.
  • Notarized power of attorney.
  • Migration movements certificate for both.
  • Discretionary additional documents.

Spouse or permanent partner: two different routes

If you are married to a Colombian, the route is the marriage duly registered in Colombia. If you live together without marriage, the route is the de facto marital union, evidenced by a public deed or notarized declaration plus cohabitation proof.

Either way the visa is category M, allows work and counts toward the Resident (R) visa.

Relationship evidence that strengthens your case

  • Colombian marriage certificate or de facto marital union deed.
  • Photos, communications and travel records showing the relationship over time.
  • Lease, utility bills or joint accounts in both names.
  • Witness statements and, if applicable, birth certificates of shared children.
  • Apostilled and translated criminal background certificate.

Benefits

  • Open work permit in Colombia.
  • Valid for up to three years, renewable, and counts toward the R visa.
  • Health and pension enrollment, foreigner ID card and banking access.
  • Minor children may be included as beneficiaries.

Important warning

The Foreign Ministry scrutinizes these cases closely and may call an interview or request extra evidence. A coherent, chronologically organized file is the difference between approval and a requirement. We build the file and support you if an interview is scheduled.
